I think it’s safe to say that Snoop exceeded expectations during the audition, because Snoop and Dr. Dre was so impressed by the sample from the mixtape that he reached out to Snoop to have him audition. That same mixtape ended up in the hands of one of the most highly respected producers in the hip hop industry, Dr. Snoop Dogg recorded a solo freestyle over the song “Hold On” by En Vogue on one of his mixtapes. The name of their group was 213 – the area code of Long Beach, their hometown.
The young, no name hip hop artist, at the time started recording with his cousin Nate Dogg and Lil 1/2 Dead and friend Warren G. After graduating high school in 1989, shortly after he was arrested for possession of cocaine, and for several years following his initial arrest, he was in and out of jail. He joined and became of a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang on the eastside of Long Beach. Snoop started getting in trouble with the law despite continual support and prevention from his mother. I could tell that my raps interested people and that made me interested in myself.” It made me begin to realize that I had a gift. As he recalls from rapping at school: “When I rapped in the hallways at school I would draw such a big crowd that the principal would think there was a fight going on.
